SHAPE – Shipping, Hydrogen & Port Ecosystems UK

NZS

The Project

Funded by the Clean Maritime Call and lead by Portsmouth University Faculty of Technology.

This 3 stranded project will see a 35KW Hydrogen Electrolyser producing ‘Blue’ Hydrogen using electricity from the port’s solar array to ‘crack’ water and produce Hydrogen to be used in a 300HP V8 outboard motor being converted by Cox Powertrain Ltd and Brighton University. The motor will be used on a purpose built boat to tow mooring lines, work Harbour patrols and undertake conservancy work.

The third strand is a digital twin of the port being created by Knownow Information Ltd, Iotic Labs Ltd and Barter for Things Ltd which will determine future power use and resource.

The project is being supported by the Connected Places Catapult with Hydrogen expertise from Engas Global Ltd.

The Aim

  • The project will show how emissions can be reduced in port operations through the transition to hydrogen in internal combustion engines.
  • The scaleable nature of the Hydrogen Electrolyser allows for commercialisation of the project and further conversion of freight hauling units within the port.
  • The port aims to have land-based units converted to running on Hydrogen by 2024.
  • The long term targets are tied-in with the ports declaration to be Net Carbon Neutral by 2030 and to be providing Hydrogen to ships for Zero Emission Shipping by 2050.

Priorities

  • Operational Electrolyser on the port before March 2022
  • Operational Hydrogen powered port launch on the water by March 2022
  • Hydrogen powered ground haulage by 2024
  • Carbon Neutral Port by 2030
  • Improved Air Quality for every diesel engine converted to Hydrogen
