Hydrogen Innovation Initiative (HII)

The UK has created the Hydrogen Innovation Initiative (HII) - a collaborative initiative between the Catapult Network, National Physical Laboratory, Net Zero Technology Centre, the Aerospace Technology Institute and Advanced Propulsion Centre, spanning the end-to-end hydrogen system. HII which will identify innovation priorities, crowd in investment, pilot innovation support for businesses and generate enabling knowledge and capability. The consortium has been granted £6M over 2 years by Innovate UK to kick-start its efforts – this grant is referred to as HII’s ‘seed’ programme.

HII has a remit to look at cross-modal opportunity and a number of transport sectors. Maritime is a key focus of one of the seed activities – the consortium is working with industry, government and academia to identify and address sector innovation priorities.

The Hydrogen Innovation Initiative recently supported Associated British Ports to trial a hydrogen fuelled tractor in its container terminal at the Port of Immingham. Learning from the trial will be shared more widely across industry shortly and has already seen interest from an Indian trade delegation earlier in the month.

The Hydrogen Innovation Initiative also has seed activities on green hydrogen production with wind, hydrogen for domestic and industrial heating, cryogenics and hydrogen standards.

As a result of and in parallel to HII seed, HII is working to build consortia and crowd in investment to launch major joint industry programmes. If this is of interest to you please do reach out.
