Ruth studied Naval Architecture, graduating with an MEng in Ship Science. Subsequently she was employed in a graduate scheme based at the Devonport dockyard in Plymouth, and worked in a number of different departments supporting the Royal Navyʼs ships and submarines during docking periods and refits.
2015 saw a move to a leading developer of autonomous vessels, where she held roles as a naval architect, project manager and systems engineer. Ruth spent 5 years working on the design, testing and operation of a number of remotely operated and autonomous systems, from small survey class to mine-sweeping and countermeasure vessels. During an Innovate UK funded programme she oversaw R&D which enhanced the company's capabilities through the development of autonomous acoustic tracking algorithms. As the Maritime & Coastguard Agency increased its support for autonomous shipping, Ruth joined the newly formed Maritime Future Technologies team as an Autonomy Technical Specialist at the beginning of 2021. Since joining she has been working to support industry partners in achieving design approval and the operation of autonomous vessels, the development of national regulations, and engaging with IMO committees related to autonomous shipping.
Ruth is also a keen sailor, and has completed three Fastnets.
