About the university

LJMU has an active research base that informs its teaching, and strong connections to maritime universities and administrations throughout the world. LJMU is among the largest UK universities, with 25,000 students from over 100 countries, 2,500 staff and 250 courses. It is one of six UK universities with a maritime specialism, rooted in England’s first Nautical College, founded in 1892 and is a full member of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU). Uniquely in the UK, the Department of Maritime and Mechanical Engineering at LJMU has a both vocational seafarer training and a well-established bachelor and master’s Maritime Operations Management offer.  

To cement its distinguished research reputation, LJMU has developed an international network of knowledge partners within the maritime and engineering sectors and works with universities throughout Europe, Asia and America in key overseas shipping hubs (e.g. Cyprus, China and Germany). The Liverpool City Region has one of the UK’s largest clusters of marine and maritime businesses, based around the port. The University has a formal working relationship with the regional sector representative body (Mersey Maritime), which represents 1,300 employers from the North West and is a member of the national cluster organization Maritime UK.
