News: University of Plymouth is sponsoring second Maritime UK Awards

MUK Awards

The University of Plymouth has been announced as one of the prestigious Diamond Sponsors for the second Maritime UK Awards. It is also sponsoring the Business of the Year Award at this industry event.

The awards, due to be held in Plymouth later this year, are the UK’s national maritime awards organised by industry, for the benefit of industry.

Representing 3000 staff, researchers and students, the University of Plymouth's Marine Institute is the first and largest such institute in the UK. The staff represented by the Marine Institute are housed within four University of Plymouth faculties (science and engineering, arts and humanities, business, health and human sciences) and form the broadest portfolio of marine expertise within a single institute in Europe.

Dr Stavros Karamperidis, Programme Manager of MSc International Logistics and Shipping Programmes and Mr David Adkins, Associate Head of School for Marketing, Admissions and Recruitment say: “We are sponsoring the awards as we have a long and proud association with the maritime industry. We strongly believe that we need to promote our maritime sector and remove the sea blindness that exists in our country. As an island nation, we could not thrive without a strong shipping and ports sector. Promoting maritime business, and sponsoring these awards, through our engagement with industry and society locally, nationally and internationally, contributes to the sector thriving in a globally competitive environment.

"We are sponsoring the Business of the Year Award as we recognise the contribution maritime businesses make, supporting just under a million jobs and contributing £46.1bn to the UK economy. In the local region, maritime businesses support 108,500 jobs and contribute £3.8bn to our economy. As a university, we want to celebrate the local, national and international impact we in the UK enjoy in an intensely competitive global maritime industry.”

Ben Murray, Director at Maritime UK, said: “We’re thrilled to have the University of Plymouth on board as the Diamond Sponsor and for the Business of the Year award. It provides an extensive pool of world-leading experts and state-of-the-art facilities, enabling us to understand the relationship between the way we live, the seas that surround us and the development of sustainable policy solutions.

Our goal for the awards is to share best practice and drive higher standards throughout the industry, which is extra important at this turbulent time, and the support of University of Plymouth is helping to make that a reality.”

The 2020 Maritime UK Awards are open to companies from across the breadth of the maritime sector, including shipping, ports, services, engineering, and leisure marine industries.
