News: Maritime UK responds to CCC progress report

Commenting on the Climate Change Committee’s progress report to Parliament, Maritime UK Chief Executive, Ben Murray, said:

“Today’s report calls on Government to back its climate promises with climate action, and this is needed most in our maritime industry.

“Net zero won’t happen without steering our ships in a green direction. Yet while the Government is among the few in the world that has published a clean maritime plan, it’s far behind others in providing the crucial investment to make this happen.

“The Climate Change Committee is right to highlight the development of shore power as a priority. This is a proven technology that can reduce emissions at ports to zero today, while charging the electronic Teslas of the seas of tomorrow. However, while 16 countries already have these capabilities thanks to government support, the UK has none.

“To build these across our coast and to the develop the green propulsion solutions of the future, the sector will need £1 billion of government investment. Much more than the £20m announced by the Prime Minister as part of his ten-point plan in November, which compared to what we need, is a drop in the ocean.”
