A 'just culture': improving safety and organisational performance

An effective safety culture is necessary for operating safely. It means organisations must be able to learn from their mistakes and continuously improve. Underpinning this is the concept of a ‘just culture’.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency published this information sheet for middle to senior management who want to establish and support an effective safety culture. It covers:

  • on-board ‘safety culture’, which is essential to safe operations
  • ‘just culture’, which sees human error as a way for organisations and staff to learn and improve.
