Celebrating National Inclusion Week 2024
This National Inclusion Week, I find myself reflecting on the large number of recent maritime events, these were all excellent events which showcased the amazing work being undertaken by our sector. They also provided a timely reminder that work still needs to be done to create a more diverse and inclusive environment within the maritime sector.
Diversity in the maritime sector is not just a matter of doing the right thing, it is also a matter of economic prosperity. Studies have shown that companies with diverse workforces are more innovative, productive, and profitable. Diversity brings a wider range of perspectives and experiences to the table, which can lead to better decision-making and problem-solving.
In an industry as global as maritime, diversity is essential for ensuring that we are able to meet the challenges of the future. We need to have a workforce that is inclusive and we need to create an environment where everyone feels welcome and respected.
I am delighted that at the start of this month we relaunched the Maritime UK Diversity Pledge and Charter. The Charter and Pledge are a commitment to fostering a more inclusive, equitable, and diverse workplace in the maritime industry. By signing, organisations take a public stance on promoting diversity and inclusion in the sector.
As someone who works in the maritime sector, I am proud to be a part of an industry that is committed to diversity and inclusion. I believe that we have a responsibility to create a more inclusive environment for all, and I am excited to see the progress that we are making.
I urge all maritime businesses to sign the Maritime UK Diversity Pledge and Charter. By working together, we can create a more diverse and inclusive maritime sector that is better for everyone.
