Georgios Koligianni

Biography

Geogios Koligiannis is a current student at the University of Plymouth, studying towards an MSc in International Logistics and Supply Chain Management. He previously worked as a supply officer in the Hellenic Navy, and gained experience and expertise in the areas of supply chain management and logistic support in the public sector. More recently, he worked as a supply chain manager in the Hellenic Navy's General Staff. 

Introduction to research

Koligiannis' research aims to explore the cyber threat landscape in the maritime sector, and to highlight the need for a promulgated framework, as well as provoding possible measures to protect shipping companies and port authorities against malicious actors. The research has been conducted in comparison to the financial sector and NATO, using qualitative and quantitative data. As an asset-intensive sector investing in digital technology, the cyber threat landscape in the maritime industries has grown significantly. The notable example of the NonPetya ransomware, and the financial losses and logistical disruptions that followed have highlighted the need for increased awareness in the sector, and the demand for further research into cyber policies. 

Why did you choose maritime as your area of study and research?

I was chosen to participate in the MSc International Logistics and Supply Chain Management at the University of Plymouth by the Hellenic Navy's leadership, and qualified through a demanding succession of exams, scoring the highest marks among all participants. The maritime sector has always been a field of interest for me, having served four years on different war ships during my careers as a supply officer in the Navy. A robust maritime sector helps global trade thrive, and makes global value chains more integrated and efficient. Furthermore, the maritime sector constitutes a fundamental pillar of the Greek economy, and the master's programme at Plymouth enables me to view the changes in the sector and the economy as a whole following the international financial crisis in a critical manner.

What do you hope to get out of participating in the Maritime Masters programme?

The university's reputation and position in the academic world constitutes an ideal place for me to take the next step in my career, as I am interested in finance, international relations and technology.
